Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety is a condition that Oxford Mind Therapy specialises in due to its prevalence globally. As a natural response to stress, anxiety can be experienced by anyone. It has the capacity to overstate every fear and worry you have, leading to a persistent sense of impending doom, even when there’s no immediate threat. Your mind races, your heart pounds, and you might feel restless. Anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms too like sweating, trembling, or feeling dizzy. It’s a relentless loop of “what if” scenarios that keep playing in your head, often disrupting daily life and sleep.

You don’t have to live with anxiety, I am here to help!

Depression is another emotion that you should not tolerate as it can result in a profound sense of hopelessness and despair that can persist for weeks, months, or even longer. You will have a sense that everything feels harder, even getting out of bed! You might lose interest in activities you once enjoyed, experience changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and have trouble concentrating. It can also bring about feelings of guilt or worthlessness which can lead to some types of addiction such as alcohol, food and others.  At its worst, depression can make you feel like life isn’t worth living and at Oxford Minds Therapy we say NO to that.

You don’t have to be depressed, I am here to help!

At Oxford Minds Therapy, my aim is to break your cycle of negative thought patterns and behaviours using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT is widely used and effective with its focus on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Relationships

Relationship challenges are at the heart of what we do at the Oxford Minds Therapy. This is because if you are experiencing issues in your marriage or with family members or even with friends or colleagues at work, your mental health can be significantly impacted, contributing to or exacerbating various psychological issues. These relational issues can also lead to some types of addiction such as alcohol, food and others. Here’s an overview of how your relationship dynamics can influence your mental well-being:

Communication IssuesMisunderstandings, lack of clarity, and ineffective communication styles can lead to conflict and frustration. Poor communication often results in feelings of isolation and resentment.

Trust IssuesBetrayals, infidelity, or past traumas can lead to mistrust between partners, affecting emotional intimacy. Persistent doubt about a partner’s intentions can create anxiety and insecurity.

Conflict and ResolutionFrequent arguments or unresolved conflicts can create a toxic environment, leading to stress and emotional exhaustion. A lack of conflict resolution skills can perpetuate cycles of blame and anger.

Power ImbalancesRelationships characterised by unequal power dynamics can lead to feelings of helplessness or resentment. Issues of control may manifest in emotional or physical abuse, adversely affecting mental health.

Emotional DistanceA lack of emotional connection or affection can lead to feelings of neglect and loneliness. Emotional withdrawal can create a vicious cycle, where one partner’s distance triggers further withdrawal in the other.

Dependency IssuesCo-dependency can lead to unhealthy attachments, where one partner’s self-worth is overly reliant on the other. This can stifle personal growth and cause anxiety when the relationship is threatened.

Trauma & PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Oxford Minds Therapy recognises that many people experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime and you may be one of them. This might include events such as natural disasters, serious accidents, terrorist acts, war/combat, rape, or other violent personal assaults.  We also know that trauma can affect individuals differently. Some may recover naturally over time, while others might develop long- term effects, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Trauma refers to how you respond to an event or series of events that are deeply distressing or disturbing emotionally and psychologically.  PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after a person has been exposed to a traumatic event.

These events can overwhelm your ability to cope. Below are some examples:

Fight-or-Flight Response: During a traumatic event, your body activates its survival mechanisms, releasing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This can lead to heightened awareness, increased heart rate, and quickened breathing.

Long-term Effects: Chronic exposure to trauma can lead to dysregulation of your body’s stress response system, potentially affecting physical health (e.g. cardiovascular issues, autoimmune disorder)

Trust Issues: Difficulty trusting others due to past betrayals or losses.

Emotional Withdrawal: You may distance yourself from loved ones to avoid triggering memories.

Fear of Intimacy: Anxiety about being vulnerable or getting close to others.
